Why You Should Know About Mineralization

A diet high in alkaline-forming foods helps the mineralization of our bones.

Are you craving something salty? Chances are, you may be demineralized. Demineralization is the process of reducing mineral ions in the HA crystals of hard tissues, for example, enamel, dentin, cementum and bone – and it’s more common than you think!

A precursor to osteopenia and osteoporosis, demineralization contributes to loss of bone density and can develop when we lack the dietary nutrients to build calcium structures.

What Causes Demineralization?

A few things that can contribute to demineralization are:

    Stress and acidity

A diet high in acidic or acid-forming foods can contribute to the production of osteoclasts, or cells that absorb bone. These foods include corn, poultry, simple carbs and soft drinks. When we’re stressed, we acidify, further imbalancing our mineral concentration.

        Over-exercising

Producing an excess of sweat and depleting electrolytes without replacing those mineral values can contribute to demineralization.

        Poor gut health

If your gut is leaking or inflamed, chances are that even the most mineral-dense foods won’t be absorbed. Try cutting out inflammatory foods like oxalates, gluten, peas, corn, refined sugar and cow dairy to give your body a chance to reset.

        How to Improve Mineralization

You can improve your mineralization by:

            Diet

Eat a diet rich in alkalizing foods like citrus, green vegetables, root vegetables and nuts. The alkalinity of these foods helps to build calcium, potassium and magnesium, helping you stay closer to that ideal pH for cell health, between 7.35 and 7.45.

            Exercise

Make sure that when you exercise, you are getting enough sodium and potassium to replace what you’re sweating out. An electrolyte powder mixed in water can help.

            Supplement with a mineral complex

Take a mineral complex that contains a full spectrum of vital minerals that you may not be getting in your diet. I like the Complete Mineral Complex from Designs By Health.

            Absorb minerals through the skin

If you need a quick fix for depletion, a magnesium cream or hot bath with magnesium chloride flakes can do wonders for remineralization and improving adrenal function.
