The Impact of Toxins on Fertility

A clean, healthy diet free of toxins increases fertility for people who want to become pregnant.

On a recent Humanized Health podcast, Rebekah Kelley spoke with Dr. Joseph Pizzorno about the impact of toxins on fertility. They discuss toxins that cause male infertility, toxins that cause female infertility, toxins that cause IVF failure, and toxins that cause damaged fetuses. Dr. Pizzorno also addresses toxins and what can be done in his most recent book, The Toxin Solution, where he exposes the amount of toxins found in "healthy food." Fruits and vegetables can be riddled with pesticides and other chemicals that we ingest, causing harm to our health.

Toxins in Our Food

There are three reasons the majority of our food is now ladled with chemicals.

Synthetic Fertilizers

When industrial farming was introduced 70 years ago, farmers started to become dependent on synthetic fertilizers, which exhausted soil to maximize profits. Phosphates, a major ingredient in synthetic fertilizers, can release high levels of cadmium, a highly toxic metal, into the soil. Even worse, the fertilizers do not replace the trace minerals we need. The result is that the soil becomes progressively more depleted. When we eat foods grown in mineral-depleted soil, they more easily absorb metals like cadmium, which is linked to osteoporosis and even to the major killer diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Insecticides

Another result of industrial agriculture was that farmers began to spray foods with insecticides on a large scale. Most of these insecticides, such as the organochlorines and organophosphates, are neurological poisons.

Herbicides

Many foods are now inadvertently contaminated with herbicides. This happens because herbicides like glyphosate, used in genetically modified crops, are sprayed on the ground to keep down the growth of weeds. There are many ways these herbicides damage our bodies. They are hormone disruptors and they damage DNA, making cells age faster and become more susceptible to cancer. To avoid these toxins, try to consume organic produce as much as possible.

All of these factors can affect fertility. In his book, Dr. Pizzorno outlines what can be done to decrease the toxin load on our bodies. He also recommends toxic load testing. Every day, we are exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals through products like pharmaceuticals, pesticides, packaged foods, household products and environmental pollution. As we have become more exposed to chemical-laden products and to toxic chemicals in food, air and water, we have been confronted with an accelerating rate of chronic illnesses like cancer, heart disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, chemical sensitivity, autism spectrum disorders, ADD/AD(H)D, autoimmune disorders, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease and infertility.
