4 Items I Never Forget When I Head to Our Cottage

Keep a handy list of travel essentials for when you're going on a trip.

Once the warm weather starts, my husband and I pack up the kids and head to our little sanctuary up north. There is bound to be something left behind with the numerous trips we make, but I always make sure that these four items are in our bags before the car rolls out of the driveway.

Sunscreen

Regardless of your destination, it's crucial to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Pack a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to shield your skin from sunburn and reduce the risk of long-term damage. The Environmental Working Group released their best and safest sunscreens for 2023. Check the list to see if your sunscreen makes the grade.

I have mentioned this before but my favorite sunscreen for my kids is Badger Sunscreen SPF 30. It protects them like no other sunscreen I have tried, especially for my youngest, who is very fair. It creates a physical block using zinc oxide. It is also scentless and water resistant. Village Green Apothecary carries a selection of safe sunscreens.

Bug Repellent

Insects can be a nuisance, especially in outdoor environments. We use a combination of essential oils, and clothing to avoid getting bitten. We always pack this bug repellent. It contains citronella and essential oils to help ward off mosquitoes. It is also DEET-free, so you can feel comfortable using it on your whole family. Here are some more tips to learn how you can protect your family from these common summer insects.

Arnica

Arnica is a natural remedy commonly used to alleviate muscle aches, soreness, and bruising. With all of our outdoor activities, there is bound to be a bruise or two, so this little homeopathic remedy is a miracle in a bottle. The tiny tablets can easily be dissolved in a little bit of water for even the smallest child.

Biodegradable and Phosphate-Free Soap

If you'll be swimming in lakes or other natural bodies of water, it's essential to use environmentally friendly products to minimize your impact on the ecosystem – plus these products are the healthiest for you, too. Look for lake-safe or biodegradable shampoos and other personal care items to ensure you're being responsible while enjoying nature. Dr. Bronner’s Organic Sugar Soap is our go-to. It has many uses and is safe for the environment and your body!
