Have a Great Holiday Weekend!

a fun holiday weekend outside

The first official weekend of summer is approaching and this year it is unlike any other Memorial Day weekend we have experienced. Still, many of us will be enjoying the nice weather and the long holiday weekend with barbecues and being outdoors. To help get you prepared for the 3-day weekend, I have rounded up some recipes that are delicious, as well as blogs about protecting you from everything under the sun... like bugs and, well, the sun! And for this year, don't forget about social distancing and other safety precautions to keep you, your family, and your friends healthy.

Safer Grilling Practices: For most people, barbecuing is one of the true joys of summertime, and warm weather will also have many people lighting up the grill. But grilling is unfortunately associated with some real health risks. Research has identified carcinogenic by-products associated with grilled foods, particularly red meat, poultry, lamb, pork and fish. So before you turn on the barbecue, here are some tips on healthier ways to grill, as well ways to make your food more flavorful.

Portobello Mushroom Burger: Instead of throwing steaks, burgers and wings on your grill, try a portobello mushroom instead. Portobellos are big mushrooms that have a meaty quality, which makes them a great substitute for a beef patty. These vegan burgers are a good way to introduce a meatless dish to someone who loves their beef, but wants a healthier and more vegetarian lifestyle.

Tofu Shish Kebobs: This vegan version of classic shish kabob uses tofu and plenty of vegetables.

Grilled Fruit: Grilling isn’t just for meat, veggies and tofu. Grilled fruits are great! High heat from the barbecue caramelizes fruits’ natural sugars, making them melt-in-your-mouth juicy. Here are 10 fruit options that will make you put the steaks away!

Bug Blogs

Natural Bug Protection for the Summer: Mosquitoes, black flies and ticks are just a few of nature’s creatures that can be a nuisance to many people who love the outdoors. But sometimes, they can be more than nuisance. West Nile virus, Zika virus and Lyme disease are just a few of the diseases that can be spread by their bites. But don’t hide indoors or douse yourself with commercial insect repellents. Try natural bug protection to outsmart these pests, or take the sting out of getting bitten.

Protect Yourself Against Ticks and Lyme Disease: With tick populations surging everywhere, the instance of Lyme disease is also on the rise. Learn how to protect your self from ticks and how to remove them correctly if they decide to make you a snack.

Sun Blogs

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and although many of us know the dangers of the sun, many people still continue to ignore the potentially damaging effects of the sun on our health.
